    POSITION SUMMARY:   PLANT MAINTENANCE

    The employee must be able to read piping drawings, remove and install different types of piping systems in a safe, efficient manner.

     TASKS:

    1. Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipe lines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
    2. Accurately interpret and apply information from work orders, job orders, specifications, blueprints, ISO’s or other drawings and recognize basic blueprint terms and symbols for job application.
    3. Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications.
    4. Measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading.
    5. Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints.
    6. Cut, thread, and hammer pipe to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, and pipe threaders and benders.
    7. Identify, recognize and demonstrate safe usage of power tools appropriate for the job,
    8. Recognize various materials used in piping systems and demonstrate a working knowledge of appropriate material handling techniques.
    9. Select and safely use appropriate equipment which may include (but not limited to) manlifts, fork lifts, and company trucks.
    10. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in safe rigging practices.
    11. Identify, explain and perform crane hand signals.
    12. Demonstrate ability to accurately perform field measurements and sketches.
    13. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use industry standards in dimensioning fabricated piping systems.

    Required Skills

    2. Instructing - Teaching others how to do something.
    3. Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
    4. Active Learning - Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
    5. The employee must be able to use standard and/or metric rule to measure.
    6. Demonstrate ability to use whole numbers, fractions and decimals to add, subtract, multiply and divide and be able to accurately follow instructions.
    7. Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
    8. Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

    Some types of jobs will require special training. Examples: The fusion welding of “Polyethylene” pipe; the handling and assemble of “Gifford/Hill Concrete Pipe,” the assembly of various lined pipes and testing according to manufactures data.

    The employee must understand rigging and cable selection. Must be able to determine the weights of various pipes by using the industry approved weight tables.

     

    NOTE: The location of most job sites are within the confines of a chemical plant environment. Prior to working at the job site, specific training will be provided as to the nature of the products in that area, the safety requirements, the necessary protective equipment needed, procedures to follow should abnormal conditions arise.

     

    Certain jobs will require that “Process Blinds” be installed. The use of various test meters will be required when working in “Confined Space” job locations.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Positions require working in: climbing, bending, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, standing, lifting, pushing, and pulling.

    1. Good hand eye balance and the ability to distinguish colors are required in order to use the tools that are necessary to perform the required work.
    2. Employees must have vision which has good depth perception in order to judge distance and space relationships.
    3. The employee must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.
    4. The ability to work in elevated positions is a must.
    5. The employee must be able to work in confined spaces as well as wear the following safety equipment when need be: life vests, ear protection, rubber gloves, leather gloves, hard hat, slicker suit, acid suit, rubber gloves, full face breathing mask, wearing full safety harness, or wearing a face shield.
    6. The heavy work demands will require up to 100 pounds of force to be exerted occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force to be exerted frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force to be exerted constantly to move objects.

     

     

     

    Required Experience

    Should have 1 - 3 years of experience as a Pipefitter Helper or similar experience

    Should have 1-2 years experience as a journeyman Pipefitter or Boilermaker

    2 years of formal Pipefitter training may substitute for up to 2 years of helper experience
