  • Responsibilities

    The Camp Counselor is responsible for the direct supervision of program participants, the planning/implementation of age-appropriate activities, and the safety of participants enrolled in Adventure Camp, Trek & Travel Camp, or Before/After Camp. Camp meets for nine to ten weeks Mondays through Fridays during the months of June through August. Hours worked will vary based on position and mandatory training sessions are required which may be on nights or weekends beginning in late May. Counselors report to the Camp Site Directors as well as the Camp Director. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: This position is responsible for knowing the whereabouts and safety of all campers and fellow staff at all times; leading and participating in activities; sharing ideas for activities related to fitness, health awareness and social behaviors tailored to the camper's age and ability levels; and keeping parents informed of upcoming activities, child behavior, injuries that occur during camp hours and concerns regarding camp and campers; and attending all training and weekly staff meetings. Qualifications: *High school diploma or equivalent and some college preferred. *A minimum of one year of day camp experience or a similar program preferred. *Excellent verbal and written communication skills. *Ability to work well with program participants and parents. *Must be certified in First Aid, Adult CPR and Infant/Child CPR or be able to obtain certification prior to the camp start date. *Ability to swim at an intermediate level of skill. *Ability to participate in daily mild to rigorous activities consistently. Attributes: We are seeking dedicated and energetic individuals who like working with children. The position requires standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, and seeing; flexibility of work schedule which may include days, nights, and weekends; is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions which may include varying weather conditions, and is subject to chlorinated water. Summer Camp Program Overview Before and After Camp Program Content: Those participants that are registered for Adventure Camp and/or Trek & Travel Camp are eligible to register for our Before & After Camp services. These programs were designed to allow parents to drop their campers off between the hours of 7am to 9am and pick them up between the hours of 4:30pm and 6pm for additional fees. Participants will remain at the Athletic Recreation Center to take part in a variety of activities lead by camp staff. Activities include small group games, arts & crafts and large group games. Adventure Camp Program Content: The program will include a balance of both quiet and active play. Activities will include swimming at various times throughout the week (weather permitting), a field trip every week, arts and crafts, group fitness, time spent at the library, nature activities, games, health and wellness activities, hikes, and organized sports. Camp locations will vary each day. Campers will spend time at the Athletic Recreation Center and will walk to other parks and program sites in Woodridge. (Please look at the last page in the park district's Activity Guide for a detailed listing of program sites.) Swimming lessons are not available through camp. The Site Director(s) should be informed in advance if the child is taken out of camp for swim lessons or any other activity that is being held during camp hours. The Site Director(s) should receive a written note from the parent/guardian regarding this issue. Campers will be divided into teams, determined by the year in school they will be entering in the fall. Each camp will have a 1:10 or less camp staff to camper ratio. Due to the number of campers attending camp each week, we CANNOT guarantee special requests to keep friends, siblings or relatives of different ages together. We also cannot guarantee campers will be placed with a particular staff member. Group 1 = 1st through 3rd grade Group 2 = 4th through 5th grade Trek & Travel Program Content: Participants must be entering 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade in the fall to participate. Participants will go on a field trip three times a week. Field Trips are tentative and may change at any point in time during camp. For some field trips, separate waivers must be filled out before a camper is able to participate. Participants will take part in sport-related activities, community service, swim at Cypress Cove, canoe, health and wellness activities, visit the library, and develop leadership skills through various activities while participating in camp.
