About the Role
Flyaway Geese is hiring a Working Dog Handler to assist with wildlife control operations at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) expansion project.
This is a hands-on, outdoor role working with trained Border Collies to humanely move and deter Canada geese from active construction zones. The work is conducted primarily at night and on weekends when bird pressure is highest and site conditions are safest for operations.
What You’ll Do
Handle and work alongside trained Border Collies in active field conditions
Patrol construction zones, shorelines, and rock areas (riprap) on foot
Humanely haze and move geese off-site using dog pressure
Maintain control and safety of dogs at all times
Follow site safety protocols and communicate with team members
Log visits and observations after each shift
Work Conditions
Outdoor work in all weather conditions
Uneven terrain (rock, shoreline, construction surfaces)
Night shifts and weekend coverage required
High-activity role involving walking, handling dogs, and staying alert
What We’re Looking For
Reliable and able to work independently
Comfortable working nights and weekends—this is required
Physically capable of walking long distances on rough terrain
Confident around dogs and able to maintain control in high-distraction environments
Background in dog handling, military, construction, landscaping, or outdoor work is a strong plus
What This Job Is NOT
Not a low-effort or “watch the dogs” position
Not a daytime or weekday-only role
Not suitable for someone uncomfortable working in the dark or outdoors
