    Xcell Biosciences is a San Francisco-based life science start-up company that has developed a proprietary cell control system for use in research, drug development, and regenerative medicine applications. The technology delivers simple, standardized methods in control of tumor cells and immune cells. This novel platform enables direct disease insights and control of microenvironment ex vivo, with use in drug development applications ranging from novel cancer biomarker discovery to cell-based immunotherapy lead optimization. The company is focused on tools to improve primary cell expansion, transfection and control of cell state, and is generating revenue from the Avatar system launched in 2017.

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

    We are looking for an engineering technician to preform service support for a novel biotech laboratory research instrument. An ideal candidate will have hands on experience troubleshooting instruments and be ready to interact with gas-controlled bioreactors, temperature control systems, plumbing for gas composition control, and basic electronics. They will be able to travel to customer sites for installs and service visits if necessary. They would work closely to help and support the engineering team with testing and implementing new designs, running the Form 3 3D printer, soldering, and other skills.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Works with and supports engineers and consultants to provide hands-on help for new product instrument design, feature set functionality, system architecture, and component choice
    • Can learn a system well enough to troubleshoot and diagnose and then fix a problem with an instrument
    • Can manage multiple tasks and prioritize their time appropriately
    • Helping Engineers prototype their new product designs in-house
    • Preforms Quality Assurance on multiple types of instruments
    • Supports R&D and customer-facing teams with on-site with instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, and works with Ops to create troubleshooting, service, and repair documentation
    • Some business travel required

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

    • High School diploma or equivalent with 2 -4 years' experience
    • At least 2 years of experience in mechanical troubleshooting
    • Experienced working with Operations, field support engineering or other service / troubleshooting teams
    • Can demonstrate ability to write engineering and manufacturing documentation. Can demonstrate ability to document experimental test reports
    • Is detail oriented and organized

    OTHER DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS AND ATTRIBUTES:

    • Masters or Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering
    • 3-6 years of experience working in a company that designs and/or manufactures lab measurement or test equipment. Preference for biotech, bio-chemistry, or chemical engineering equipment
    • Highly motivated self-starter who can prioritize and take ownership of tasks
    • Excited to be “hands-on” in solving product problems
    • Must be comfortable in a rapidly growing and evolving start-up environment
