  • Responsibilities

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, the lifeguard is responsible for the safety, cleanliness, and operation of the swimming pool. The primary function of the lifeguard/swim instructor will be to safeguard the health and safety of all campers, associates, and guests. Must demonstrate a commitment to Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all aspects of job performance.

    Successful candidates will provide a nurturing, fun, and engaging swimming program for all campers and actively participate in camp activates and other initiatives that support the vision for Y Camps -  providing the experience of a lifetime for every camper.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Responsible for daily cleaning and general maintenance of swimming pool (including vacuuming, backwashing, etc..), pool decks, bath house, and surrounding areas
    • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and Y health and safety regulations and maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
    • Complete daily checklists, and best practices to ensure a first class swimming pool operation
    • Attend in-service training weekly as assigned by Camp Director or Assistant Director
    • Teaches swim lessons and ensures that all swim cards and progress reports are distributed as directed by Camp Director
    • Foster an environment that is positive and motivating to children and peers.
    • Maintains all records, licenses, and permits as required by local and state codes
    • Adheres to Y operating standards and risk management policies
    • Maintain high quality standards adhering to or surpassing association standards, and care and maintenance of program facility and equipment.
    • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
    • Responsible for conducting classes according to the YMCA of the USA Aquatic Program, adapted where necessary for local conditions
    • Responsible for the efficiency of the lesson program through rigorous adherence to standards set for progression and honest evaluation of student's abilities.
    • Maintains the highest level of safety in all activities. The instructor is responsible for the safety of his or her class at all times
    • Responsible for safety of all swimmers during shift and for the interpretation and enforcement of all pool rules

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

     

     

    • Must be able to remain alert.
    • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
    • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
    • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
    • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 100 pounds.
    • Ability to perform duties inside and outside (environments include humidity, head, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
    • Ability to maintain continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking.
    • ACCEPT THAT QUANTITY OF WORK HOURS SCHEDULED WEEKLY WILL FLUCTUATE BETWEEN 0 AND 40, AND MAY INCLUDE NIGHT AND WEEKEND HOURS.
    • Lifeguard's would be sitting or standing during their entire shift of work. 
    • Exposure to some chemicals; hot humid environment.
    • Intellectual and cognitive requirements (collaborative, teamwork, decision making, analysis, etc)

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

     

    Physically able to successfully complete required job functions, including use of hands, arms, fingers, able to talk and hear, use a computer, sit and stand, enter all YMCA environments (office spaces, indoor and outdoor maintenance/mechanical areas, fitness areas, pool and pool space, camping areas, unimproved outdoor locations and other program areas).

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties.

    An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position.  The requirements may include background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or criminal background check.

    Additional drivers license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.

    Required Skills

    • Passion to work in a camp environment and creating memorable experiences for every camper
    • Successful completion and passing of the Y in Central Maryland/YUSA swim test
    • WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AND COMPLETE Y CAMP ORIENTATION, SWIMMING POOL ORIENTATION, OR OTHER TRAININGS AS ASSIGNED BY SUPERVISOR
    • Current oxygen administration certification - highly desirable but required to be certified within 30 days from date of hire
    • Swim Instructor certification preferred

    Required Experience

    • Current lifeguard certification from American Red Cross or other certifying body is preferred

    Lifeguard I:  0-1 year experience with current YMCA Lifeguard certification.

    Lifeguard II:  Minimum of 1 year experience with current certification.

    Lifeguard III:  Minimum 2 years as Lifeguard with YMCA and 5-8 years total experience as a certified lifeguard.

    Lifeguard IV:  Minimum 5 years as Lifeguard with YMCA and 9+ years total experience as a certified lifeguard.
