    CAMP DESCRIPTION:

    Y Camp Spencer is the newest camping facility for the Y in Central Maryland and represents our boldest to date. Designed as a regional day camp and conference/retreat center, Y Camp Spencer is nestled on over 200 acres of pristine campgrounds. Mesmerizing mountain views, lush green fields, outdoor pool, amphitheater, gentle wildlife, dining hall, activity buildings, nature and craft lodges, horseback riding facility, and nature trails are just a few of our amenities. Located on the Boy Scout’s Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation in Harford County, Y Camp Spencer will provide a picture perfect, all-inclusive Y camp experience unlike any other in Central Maryland. The vision for Y Camp Spencer is to provide experiences that last a lifetime in an environment that awakens dreams and allows every camper to build self-confidence, independence, and forge relationships.

    In addition to a first-class regional summer day camp program, Y Camp Spencer will operate in the off-season providing conference/retreat and services, family camp, teen programming, and a host of other enrichment activities.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE CAMP DIRECTOR, SUMMER CAMP ASSOCIATES ARE RESPONSIBLE PLANNING AND LEADING CURRICULUM-BASED ACTIVITIES WITH AN ASSIGNED GROUP OF CAMPERS EITHER IN A GROUP OR AS ASSIGNED TO A SPECIFIC ACTIVITY (SUCH AS ARCHERY, ARTS AND CRAFTS, NATURE, ETC.). MAINTAINS AND ORGANIZES ALL EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS FOR THE DESIGNATED ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE OPTIMUM USE OF RESOURCES. PROVIDES LEADERSHIP TO CAMPERS (AND ASSIGNED ASSOCIATES) AND ENSURES A HIGH-LEVEL OF PROGRAM QUALITY AND A MEMORABLE CAMPER EXPERIENCE. DEMONSTRATES THE Y’S COMMITMENT TO ITS CORE VALUES OF CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT, AND RESPONSIBILITY, AND SERVES AS A ROLE MODEL TO CAMPERS, OTHER ASSOCIATES, GUESTS AND MEMBERS.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Follow all policies and procedures for maintaining supervision of campers at all times.
    • Implements all activities on site, participating and engaging with campers and counselors, creating a quality experience with high-level energy, enthusiasm, and a great attitude.
    • Provides special care and upkeep of the program areas and equipment.
    • Provides campers with content and literature about specific activities and experiences.
    • Responsible for coordinating supply orders with the Camp Director in a timely manner.
    • Promotes positive character value in a caring camp environment.
    • Reports to work on time and in uniform for all scheduled shifts.
    • Participate in team meetings.
    • Adheres to Y operating standards and risk management policies.
    • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, meetings, trainings, planning projects, and leading those as assigned.
    • Assists in pre-program set-up and end-of-the-day clean up.
    • Provides and leads activities that among summer camp family groups that are conducive with our one-of-a-kind camp experience and its selected weekly themes and special events.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs, engage and participate in all camp related activities with campers (swim, sports, crafts), work in extreme outdoor weather conditions (sun, heat, rain) and in various environmental conditions (woods, beaches, fields, streams, nature trails), Accept that quantity of work hours scheduled weekly will fluctuate between 0 and 40, and may include nights and weekend hours.
    • Intellectual and cognitive requirements (collaborative, teamwork, decision making, analysis, etc)

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

    • Physically able to successfully complete required job functions, including use of hands, arms, fingers, able to talk and hear, use a computer, sit and stand, enter all YMCA environments (office spaces, indoor and outdoor maintenance/mechanical areas, fitness areas, pool and pool space, camping areas, unimproved outdoor locations and other program areas).

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Supervise groups of 6-10 campers. Supervise associate with groups. Enforce policy and procedures.

    Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties.

    Must complete all required trainings and as assigned

    An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position.  The requirements may include background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or criminal background check.

    Additional drivers license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.

    Required Skills Required Experience

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • At least 16 years of age
    • At least one camp season working with youth, or related experience working with large groups of children and teens, preferably in a background of various camp activity
    • Strong communication skills

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Attend all trainings, meetings and certification courses necessary within the designated time frame.
    • Passion for educating youth through traditional and innovative, fun, and exciting equestrian instruction and activities.
    • Certificate or letter of recommendation from an instructor or previous supervisor in this activity.

    CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, Basic First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention Training, and all other required Camp Trainings
