  • Responsibilities

    As a PRODUCT DESIGN ENGINEER for our manufacturing facility with SAFCO you will be focused on current product and be responsible for supporting existing product solutions through the application of engineering principles, skills and methodologies.

    This full-time position reports directly to the MANUFACTURING AND FACILITIES ENGINEER MANAGER and is located in Safco’s manufacturing location in Milford, Iowa.

    Required Skills

    IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

    • Study and understand all current and future manufacturing processes and equipment capabilities
    • Implement standard features across multiple product families to streamline continuity and gain synergies in the existing manufacturing process
    • Perform print changes on production released designs (tolerances, paint specs & various other part features) for the sake of safety, cost reduction, and efficiency gains
    • Provide support for future insourcing efforts by review and modifying existing prints or development if needed
    • Participate and lead value engineering and process improvement initiatives
    • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers, QA team members as well as manufacturing teams on a daily basis
    • Support new product design engineers by reviewing for manufacturability
    • Collaborate in the transition of products from design into production
    • Complete necessary documentation through the Product Change process
    • Ensure the redesigns of existing products relative to constraints of cost, schedule, function, aesthetics, fit, finish and manufacturing capability
    • Collaborate in development of requirements-driven specifications for material, secondary processing, fit, finish, and performance of all product components
    • Utilize 3-D CAD in the development of engineered product solutions and associated production tools
    • Manage the Bill of Materials (BOM) for products
    • Develop and maintain procedures and standards for packaging
    • Develop product packaging solutions that recognize the demands and requirements imposed by all forms of shipping employed by Safco, and ensure products arrive to the customer undamaged.
    • Partner with cross-functional teams to help troubleshoot product design issues or defects by providing recommendations and alternative approaches to the overall design, engineering, manufacturing, packaging of the product
    • May require work related travel up to 20% of the time

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Required Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering
    • At least 5 years' experience as a Design Engineer
    • Experience working with methodologies, tools, approaches and method for manufacturing products or product components, preferably with prior experience in both sourcing and manufacturing environment (Wood and Metal)
    • Experience with defining packaging requirement
    • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and Solid Works. Experience with an MRP/ERP System (JD Edwards (JDE) preferred).
    • Knowledge and experience with Six Sigma, Lean and Design of Manufacturing.
    • Experience in designing for sheet metal, plastics and wood materials
    • Project Management experience
    • Creative troubleshooting ability
