    Company Profile:

    Founded in 1977, J.W. Design & Construction has been serving the Central Coast with commercial construction projects, including hotels, wineries, mixed-use buildings, retail establishments, agricultural coolers, shopping centers, auto dealership facilities and many other commercial projects. Today, we have built and completed more large-scale projects than any other builder on the Central Coast.

    Job Summary:

    Working in conjunction with the Project Manager and Construction Superintendent, the office, design team, sub-contractors and the job site, the Project Engineer will assist to oversee the daily management of the project, and to ensure that the project requirements are met and completed on time and within budget.

    Duties / Responsibilities:

    Preconstruction and Bidding : Review plans and specifications to determine entire scope of the project for bidding, understanding as much about what is in the project documents as what is not.

    Plan Review/Document Control: Review plans, specifications, and subcontractor scopes as written by the Project Manager to determine entire scope of the project and its scheduling requirements for subcontractors, materials and labor in order to acquire a thorough working knowledge of the project documents; understanding as much about what is in the project documents as what is not.

    Scheduling: Assist the Superintendent with the weekly updates of 4 week-look-ahead schedules to be shared with Project Manager and subcontractors onsite during the weekly meeting. Weekly meeting to be mandatory for all subcontractor foreman onsite.

    Reporting: Assist the Superintendent in logging all scopes of work with photographs before work is covered up. This includes any underground, in-wall MEP’s, insulation, etc. Photos to be logged into Procore into the appropriate files. Attaching photos to the daily report is not acceptable.

    Procurement: Assist the PM and Superintendent in reviewing lead times for materials based on approved submittals as well as submittals in process, throughout the entire project. Present any conflicts or possible delays to PM. This is critical to completing the project on schedule. If there are clear conflicts in lead times, work with subcontractors and suppliers to propose an alternative material / product.

    Communication : Assist the PM and Superintendent in consulting with clients, design professionals, subcontractors, and vendors regarding issues, clarifications, and RFI’s. Communications must be documented either through phone calls that are documented on a daily report, or email correspondence. All emails, documents, mark-ups to be proof read and free of any grammatical or spelling errors.

    Changes to the Work: All changes to the contract documents must be approved through the architect and Ownership, as well as AHJ when appropriate. No work is to be performed that has any impact on cost without Ownership’s written approval. This may be done through an “additional work authorization” or if time allows, a PCO. Assist the PM in getting scope of changes to subcontractors and getting costing back from subcontractors.

    Daily Activities: Assist the Superintendent with inspecting the work and overall site conditions several times daily with a notebook and iPhone capable of taking pictures within Procore. Any safety, constructability issues, or deviations from the plans should be documented and disperses to the appropriate subcontractors for their review. Follow through any communication needed with architect or AHJ until the issue has been resolved. Document all issues within Procore on daily report and “issues log.”

    Project Closeout: Collect all Closeout documentation in digital format; including subcontractor warranties, O&M manuals, As-built drawings and attic stock.

    Qualifications:

    High school diploma or GED certification;

    1-5 years of commercial construction-related experience preferred;

    Possess OSHA 30-hour Certificate, or ability to obtain certification;

    Astute mathematical skills in being able to calculate discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;

    Proficiency in MS Office (particularly Word and Excel), MS Project, Procore and Bluebeam;

    Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

    Astute time management, multi-tasking, attention to detail and follow-through skills;

    Ability to lift 50 pounds in weight; work outside in all types of weather; climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding; walk and work on uneven ground and surfaces; work around loud noises and potentially hazardous materials; wear safety / protective equipment;

    Ability to demonstrate leadership attributes that would include instilling confidence in yourself and others; effectively motivate and influence the actions and opinions of others; capable of accepting feedback and suggestions, including team members in decision-making, facilitating and process improvement;

    Valid CA driver’s license and clean, insurable driving record.

    Compensation:

    $55,000 - $85,000 DOE annual base salary, for this full-time exempt position.
