ABOUT OUR TEAM

The backend team owns the development and operation of the microservices that power Zepl: from the customer-facing API to the underlying databases and everything in between. We deal with a diverse set of challenges, ranging from efficient data storage and retrieval, performance at cloud-scale, security and encryption, integration with third-party cloud services, cloud-native deployment and much more. 

ABOUT YOUR ROLE

As a senior backend software engineer at Zepl you will be in charge of researching, designing, implementing, testing new microservices, as well as troubleshooting and identifying areas for improvement of our existing microservices. You will be working with engineers and product owners in order to translate ideas and business requirements into technical requirements, efficient designs, and ultimately into releasable bits. The person we're looking for shares our passion and thrives in the dynamic environment that comes with being part of an innovative startup. That means having the flexibility and willingness to jump in and get done what needs to be done to delight our customers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer or Software Developer.
• Demonstrated proficiency in at least one modern object-oriented 3GL such as Java, Go, C++ or C#.
• Strong Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
• Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary for documentation, presentation, and day-to-day communications.
• Eagerness to learn new practices and technologies that will improve our overall architecture.
• Self-motivated and proactive, able to take ownership and deliver results.
• Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• An understanding of design for scalability, performance and reliability.
• Experience with databases such as SQL and NoSQL.
• Experience designing, developing and maintaining microservices.
• Experience with MySQL and/or Elasticsearch.
• Experience maintaining and developing API servers (RESTful API or GraphQL API).
• Experience developing SaaS solutions on top of AWS, Google Cloud and/or Azure.
• Knowledge of container tools such as Docker.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for full software development life cycle (SDLC), including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing and operations.
• Experience collaborating with overseas teams across time zones.
• Knowledge of Python, Scala, R or JavaScript/Node.js.
• Machine learning, AI or data science background.
• Significant contribution to an open source project.
• Comfortable with Git and Git flow.

LOCATION

This position is located at Zepl's headquarters in downtown San Jose, CA. During the COVID outbreak, we work remotely.
