OUR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (SRH) team is a leader in adapting innovative health products and services for women and girls—across health areas, levels of the health system, and geographies. Our work prioritizes approaches that enable women and girls to become users of evidence-based, supported, and convenient self-care options—including contraceptive self-injection. PATH’s Sexual and Reproductive Health team includes colleagues in Washington, DC; Seattle, WA; Kampala, Uganda; Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; Lusaka, Zambia; and Antananarivo, Madagascar, and is embedded within PATH’s Primary Health Care (PHC) program.
PATH is currently recruiting for a Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer for the DMPA-SC Access Collaborative project within the global Sexual and Reproductive Health team. The Access Collaborative is a global initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and led by PATH in collaboration with John Snow, Inc. (JSI). Since 2017, the Access Collaborative has been working with ministries of health and partners across sectors in more than 20 countries to expand women’s contraceptive options and access through introduction and scale-up of the self-injectable product DMPA-SC. With many countries advancing self-injection as an evidence-based self-care option, the Senior ADVOCACY AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER will provide critical learning exchange and advocacy support to fulfill project and team goals. This position will lead the learning, exchange, and dissemination workstream, engaging with partners in the global family planning and sexual and reproductive health community to ensure that tools and resources from the initiative are shared and applied to support self-injection introduction and scale-up, and SRH market stewardship efforts more broadly. At the same time, this position will lead development and implementation of evidence-based advocacy and communications strategies across PATH’s SRH portfolio of projects, in alignment with overall Primary Health Care program strategy. The Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer will report to the Access Collaborative Project Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the team lead for the project’s Learning, Exchange, and Dissemination workstream, including helping to set and deliver on strategy and workplan on time and within budget
- Provide strategic direction for and oversee implementation of the project’s communications strategy, and provide input into and help execute on project editorial calendar, continually looking for new opportunities and adapting approaches to maximize visibility.
- Supervise project staff leading design and implementation of project events, including a global workshop in 2022 and events at the International Conference on Family Planning, including engaging with partners, advising on agenda, developing workshop content, preparing speakers, and facilitating working sessions during the workshop.
- Provide oversight to the DMPA-SC Learning and Action Network (LAN) to increase engagement and promote cross-country learning and information sharing.
- Work with Access Collaborative regional technical advisors, country coordinators, self-injection ambassadors, and partners to document or develop national advocacy strategies related to self-injection and self-care, assess the need for and develop subnational advocacy strategies, support policy implementation, and provide technical backstopping to the global team on advocacy issues as needed.
- Working closely with the Project Director, lead coordination of global DMPA-SC partners to collaborate on policy issues, including convening stakeholders on a quarterly basis and managing partner coordination/information sharing on policy and advocacy.
- Manage tracking of Learning, Exchange, and Dissemination workstream activities, and package information for reporting to donors.
- Serve as key project representative within the global sexual and reproductive health community, including attending select meetings or events as needed and developing presentations and talking points for other global staff representing PATH.
- Author case studies, web articles, conference abstracts, or other technical publications on SRH issues as needed (e.g., task shifting policies, provision of contraceptive injectables in pharmacies, self-care), as well as conceptualizing and contributing to social media posts for the SRH global team.
- Manage one to three global staff working on the Learning, Exchange, and Dissemination workstream.
- Coordinate with other advocacy and communications initiatives across PATH, including within the PHC program and with PATH’s Advocacy and Public Policy program.
- Support relevant business development opportunities, including participation in capture planning, project design, and proposal development
Required Skills
Required Experience
- Master’s degree in public health, public policy, health communications or related field plus a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in global sexual and reproductive health (SRH), or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus a minimum of thirteen years progressively responsible professional experience in global SRH.
- 1-2 years of management and/or supervisory experience preferred
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex issues in a concise, compelling, and easily understandable manner, orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated success conceptualizing and leading learning and dissemination activities, such as cross-country exchanges and events and webinars
- Substantial previous responsibilities in knowledge management and research utilization
- Advanced presentation and facilitation skills, with groups of all sizes and across cultures and geographies, including virtual formats, and understanding of adult learning principles.
- Demonstrated success in influencing health policy and driving policy implementation at the global, national or subnational levels, with a particular focus on SRH.
- Proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with government personnel, NGO partners, and international organizations; experience working with coalitions or virtual networks desirable.
- Experience interfacing with multiple communication channels, knowledge management systems, and online platforms.
- Documented experience contributing to an inclusive environment and discussing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion as it relates to team and overall PATH priorities.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment as part of a cross-disciplinary team operating in multiple locations and time zones.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction and under tight deadlines.
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
