Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment.  We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities.  The organization operates out of nine regional offices. The Northeast office in New York focuses principally on issues related to shale gas development and environmental health, with a particular emphasis on overburdened communities and environmental justice, while the Philadelphia office focuses primarily on coal-fired power.  Earthjustice’s Northeast office is accepting applications for part-time legal externs for fall 2015 and spring 2016.  These positions are designed for current law students who are seeking academic credit for the fall or spring semester or who wish to volunteer time without receiving credit.  Positions are open in our New York City and Philadelphia offices, and applicants are expected to work on a variety of environmental litigation projects for a minimum of 12 hours per week. RESPONSIBILITIES: Legal interns work under the direct supervision of attorneys in the development and prosecution of litigation and other advocacy.  Interns will participate in a wide range of tasks that may include:

    • Conducting case investigation, legal research, and discovery.
    • Meeting with clients and experts.
    • Preparing memoranda, briefs, and other legal documents for administrative and judicial proceedings.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Demonstrated commitment to public interest, the environment or social justice.
    • Excellent research, analytic, and writing skills.
    • A strong work ethic.
    • Significant knowledge of environmental and administrative law is a plus.
    • Initiative, creative thinking, and the ability to work collegially with others.

There is no available compensation or benefits for these positions. TO APPLY: Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter. Earthjustice is driven by a passion for justice, partnership and excellence.  Our core values lead us to seek a broad range of perspectives and backgrounds to achieve our mission and to maintain an inclusive environment where all staff are valued and respected.  As an equal opportunity employer, we are committed to employment practices that ensure that employees and applicants for employment are provided with equal opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, religion, physical or mental disability, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information or any other factor that is not related to the position.
