  • Responsibilities

Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. MATERIALS ENGINEER (COMPOSITES) 

    • Create and monitor critical processes for composites used in F9 and Dragon, including primary structures, COPVs, adhesive joints, and piece parts
    • Develop new processes, materials, and required training for use in prepreg systems, resin filming, resin transfer molding, AFP/ATL, and other automated techniques
    • Develop processes to flow down to vehicle elements and subsystems
    • Participate in development of associated tests, specifications, plans, drawings, and other products required to support design, verification and certification
    • Lead material allowables development test programs
    • Manufacture of specimens
    • Transport of specimens
    • Material procurement
    • Test procurement
    • Cross-functional coordination between engineering and production disciplines

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, chemical engineering or other engineering discipline
    • 2+ years of hands-on experience working with structural/aerospace composites

    PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Coursework in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or composite processing/manufacturing
    • Understanding of the fundamentals of composite processing and material development
    • Basic knowledge of composite structural analysis
    • Experience with ASTM standards for testing of composites
    • Synthetic chemistry experience, specifically organic resin synthesis and scale up
    • Computer aided design experience using NX, Catia, or other 3D modeling software
    • Possess and maintain awareness of state-of-the-art technology advancements in the field of composites
    • Able to rapidly work and learn with minimal supervision on projects involving both small and large engineering teams
    • Able to work in highly collaborative, fast-paced environment with emphasizes in rapid prototyping and fielding of capabilities
    • Excellent communication skills
