    MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER (AVIONICS ACTUATORS)

    The Avionics group is responsible for the design, development, testing, analysis and integration of all the electronic hardware for SpaceX vehicles; this includes hardware such as power electronics, flight computers, antennas, and navigational sensors. Within Avionics, the actuator team is responsible for designing electronics to control actuators on all vehicles, and works with engineering groups across the company to develop actuators and control systems for all SpaceX vehicles.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design integrated electromechanical products to satisfy actuation needs on all SpaceX vehicles
    • Solve power electronics and electromagnetic thermal dissipation challenges
    • Analyze and test designs to survive harsh thermal environments, structural loads, vibration and shock
    • Own mechanical design, 3D modeling, analysis, creation of production drawings and maintenance of design data for multiple products
    • Failure analysis as it relates to thermal, loads, vibration and shock
    • Interface with machine shops and production teams to ensure final designs can be produced in accordance with overall project goals

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or other engineering field

    PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Knowledge of thermal and structural FEA studies
    • Experience with fatigue and thermal testing of electro-mechanical assemblies
    • Experience with NX, Solidworks, CATIA or similar CAD program
    • Experience with ANSYS or similar FEA software
    • Significant independent and group project experience
    • Experience designing and analyzing systems with drive components (including motors and gear reductions), as well as systems with significant thermal considerations

    ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

    • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
