    ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER – (PORT OF LOS ANGELES)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintain, develop or implement site specific environmental policies/permits which include but are not limited to:
      • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA), Air Quality Management District (AQMD), Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD), State Water Resources Control Board (RWQCB), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
      • Review and interpret new and proposed environmental laws and regulations, and provide guidance to management
      • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies
      • Conduct and monitor the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and other discharge permits/plans
      • Maintain record keeping and compliance requirements established for permitted sources defined by the local AQMD
    • Responsible for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including The Department of Transportation (DOT) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
    • Maintain compliance with the Certified Unified Program Agency
    • Implement and maintain site specific safety policies which include:
      • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA), Federal OSHA, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
      • Collaborate with department leadership to complete job hazard assessments
      • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards
      • Implement and maintain the site Industrial Hygiene program
      • Develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety policies are not met by employees
      • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
      • Complete and maintain documented safety observations from regular hazard identification audits
      • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures
      • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, spills, etc.)

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree
    • 3 or more years of experience in the design, development, and general operational oversight of environmental, health and safety disciplines
    • Experience in both environmental and safety fields

     

    PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with an emphasis in occupational health and safety and/or environmental engineering
    • Experience with implementing California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and/or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental mitigation measures
    • Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Experience with ergonomics and industrial hygiene 
    • Experience with emergency response communication and incident management in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
    • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)

    • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
