SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. MECHANICAL ENGINEER (TOOLING) We are looking for incredible engineers to define a way to develop/build our rockets and spacecraft - a mission critical task. The Mechanical Engineer will own tooling from conceptualization through implementation. RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design and perform analysis for development and production equipment that will support all products that SpaceX produces (projects include Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, F9R, Cargo Dragon, and Crew Dragon)
    • Maintain ownership of a few unique projects in a dynamic environment (projects will vary in size and scale). Some examples include: rocket structure and propulsion component manipulation equipment, air bearing systems, robotic drilling solutions, friction stir weld machines, roadway transportation systems, static and dynamic fixturing, etc.
    • Develop robust plans to ensure that our equipment and machine capacity is developed in line with volume production requirements
    • Resolve build discrepancies and interface with the quality team to implement cost effective solutions

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering
    • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a mechanical design engineering role

    PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Ability to apply common manufacturing and machining processes where it applies to design (including mills, lathes, manual and CNC)
    • Experience with structural analysis, including the ability to perform hand calculations
    • Experience designing mechanical systems using 3D CAD software.
    • Minimum of 2 years of collegiate extracurricular engineering project experience, such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Design Build Fly Team, Rocketry Club, etc.
    • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly including experience taking products from development design to high-volume production
    • Solid understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines including mills, lathes, manual and CNC; hands-on machining experience
    • Experience with Unigraphics (UGS/NX) and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems
    • Experience with FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, ANSYS Workbench
    • Experience with manufacturing process development, facility and line layouts, process failure mode effects analysis, and error proofing

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
