    The Staff Accountant position will assist in supporting accounting and operations for Vulcan’s $1B real estate portfolio. The position will involve working on a combination of properties both under development and in operation. This person will prepare, compile, analyze and maintain accounting records for multiple real estate entities. A basic knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting is required. The successful candidate must be a skilled and likeable communicator with expertise working with people of varied backgrounds and experiences.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Prepare monthly construction bank loan draw packages for projects under development.
    • Manage payments of construction invoices on a weekly basis.
    • Update budgets and forecasts of construction projects throughout development.
    • Assist in month-end close by preparing journal entries and reconciling general ledger accounts.
    • Reconcile monthly cash receipts.
    • Record monthly fixed asset adjustments and reconcile real estate fixed assets quarterly.
    • Calculate and prepare journal entries to record minority interest activity.
    • Prepare monthly P&L variance reports and provide commentary on significant variances.
    • Assist property managers with operational and accounting questions.
    • Maintain leasing records and calculate straight-line rent.
    • Reconcile the general ledger to subledger.
    • Assist in preparation of quarterly financial statements.
    • Maintain county and local tax registers.
    • Assist in the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
    • Review annual expense reconciliation calculations and ensure calculations are compliant with lease terms.

    KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILL, AND/OR ABILITY

    REQUIRED

    • Accounting software and systems experience.
    • Detail oriented, organized, and analytical in approach to tasks.
    • Ability to communicate with Vulcan personnel and external contacts in a professional manner with limited supervision.
    • Ability to effectively respond to requests or questions from managers and colleagues in both written and oral form.
    • High degree of flexibility and customer service attitude.
    • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments.
    • Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • An understanding of financial systems, processes and internal controls.
    • Experience working in a company accounting environment.

    PREFERRED

    • CPA or in the process of obtaining.

    PREFERRED COMPUTER SKILLS

    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office (Excel and Outlook).
    • Experience with PeopleSoft or other Oracle accounting systems.
    • Experience with real estate accounting software, specifically MRI.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree (B.A or B.S.) in accounting from an accredited institution.
    • Two years relevant accounting experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
