    POSITION SUMMARY

    Vulcan’s Impact Engineering Team designs, builds, and deploys products and services that improve people’s lives and expand the frontiers of science and technology. To help us achieve this bold mission, we are seeking a creative, results-oriented SR. MECHANICAL ENGINEER to lead product development, supply chain design, and NPI phases of bringing a room-scale immersive reality environment to market.

    The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a technical leader within the organization.  This role will be responsible for driving the thoughtful, cost-optimized design of a low-volume product into a nascent market.  The ideal candidate will have deep experience with mechanical systems design, advanced manufacturing processes and controls, and designing / implementing a comprehensive data management system.  In addition, this individual will manage critical partner / vendor communications and relationships; including contracts, specifications, design documentation, and demand plans throughout both development and sustaining phases.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Design mechanical components and systems using solid modeling and design analysis tools
    • Generate drawings and coordinate fabrication / procurement of parts and assemblies
    • Assemble and test electro-mechanical components, assemblies and systems
    • Ensure the structural safety of designs and as-built systems through detailed design analysis and documentation
    • Manage all aspects of vendor engagement, including but not limited to: Negotiating / documenting contracts, managing performance to schedule / specification, and all operations planning associated with low-volume production.
    • Support off-site field installations, including management of vendor installation teams
    • Provide guidance on hardware quality management system, manufacturing process design and controls and hardware / system acceptance testing.
    • Initiate and manage a product data management system, including production SKUs, BOMs and corresponding design documentation

    QUALIFICATIONS

    KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILL, AND/OR ABILITY

    • Superior at mechanical design and highly experienced at CAD and drawing creation
    • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Well-versed in structural analysis – hand calculations and FEA
    • Experienced with procurement and vendor management
    • Understands quality control and inspection methods
    • Experienced in assembly and integration, testing, and field operations
    • Understands supply chain design and manufacturing operations
    • Experienced implementing a product data management (PDM) system
    • Comfortable mentoring junior engineers
    • Has a learning mindset and ability to quickly ramp up on new technologies
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Experience with complex projection and “4D” systems, VR systems, or other systems that create interactive and immersive experiences a plus

    REQUIRED COMPUTER SKILLS

    • Solidworks or equivalent
    • ANSYS or equivalent
    • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Project Management software, such as Smartsheets or Jira

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS

    • BS in Mechanical Engineering from accredited institution and 10+ years relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Professional Engineer license desired
