    Job Summary:

    Selected individual will serve in a communication capacity within a Federal government agency focused on oncology, science, and research. They will support the Director and other executive leaders in their speaking engagements and communication activities that align with overall communications strategy for the Institute. This position will work closely with agency executives to draft, edit, and prepare written and oral materials for top leadership to deliver clear and concise messages around research findings and Institute priorities. The right person for the role will feel comfortable in a highly collaborative environment, while also being able to work independently and take ownership of their assignments.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop talks for scientific meetings and conferences to brief the cancer community about strategic initiatives to advance cancer research and care
    • Draft opinion pieces, talking points, letters, video scripts, blogs, briefing documents, congressional testimony, advisory board materials, and presentations
    • Tailor communication and consider plain language principles when delivering complex information to various audiences including media, scientific, and nonprofit organizations about basic science, clinical research, and the work of the Institute
    • Create Power Point slides that are clear and engaging
    • Quickly immerse in the Institutes’ strategic focus, style guidance, and research areas to determine on the most relevant and accurate messaging
    • Edit and proofread speeches and other materials to deliver error-free products
    • Lead a thorough and timely review process that incorporates feedback from various leaders, subject matter experts, stakeholders, and partners as needed
    • Prepare executive leadership with briefing memos and logistical arrangements
    • Collaborate with the larger marketing team including designers, videographers, and social media specialists to deliver engaging content as needed
    • Plan and interface with event organizers and points of contact to coordinate logistics to ensure the smooth execution of speaking events
    • Participate in internal project team and client meetings

    Requirements:

    • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Legal Permanent Resident
    • Eligible for U.S. Government Clearance.
    • Bachelor’s Degree required from college or University; Master’s degree in communications, public affairs, or public health field is a plus
    • At least 8 years of relevant work experience in journalism, speechwriting, or equivalent experience
    • Must have experience within the Federal government, health, healthcare, oncology, research or science fields
    • Familiarity with public health issues and the public health community, including associations and non-profits
    • Excellent critical thinking, writing, and organizational skills
    • Proven ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment and manage multiple concurrent projects
    • Experience with editorial calendars, project dashboards, and tracking schedules
    • Ability to create and deliver clear, powerful, and concise presentations
    • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prezi
    • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with all stakeholders and at all levels of the organization, including senior executives
    • Must be familiar with health or science (instead of political writing) - Need to understand the audience and landscape for which this content will be presented – any work with associations (e.g., ASCO, AACR, AAAS) or non-profits (e.g., Gilda’s club, ACS) is Plus
