Wisconsin’s only private medical school, the Medical College of Wisconsin, is rooted in Marquette University, but split in 1970 to form its own institution. Now sprawled across three campuses in Milwaukee, Green Bay and Central Wisconsin, MCW offers Ph.D.’s and combined M.D./Ph.D. programs in a variety of specialties, including biophysics, microbiology and functional imaging. On-campus research efforts have recently netted multi-million-dollar grants in the fields of understanding epilepsy and determining the genetic causes of obesity. MCW also sets aside a significant portion of its endowment toward a program called Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin, to improve overall community health. Its 1200 exceptionally bright students (with an average undergraduate GPA of 3.70) are a big part of why MCW conducts more than 1.6 million patient visits each year!
