Northern Essex Community College was established in 1961, in Haverhill of Essex county, Massachusetts. Tom Bergeron, of America’s Funniest Home Videos fame, is an alumnus, as is writer Daniel Lyons. The college offers associate and certificate degrees in a range of disciplines such as paralegal studies, criminal justice, and deaf studies, to name a few. Those who wish to start their careers soon after college are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge, given that NECC has career-focused programs. Catering to over 16,000 students at a time, NECC is mainly a commuter college, with a highly diverse student body that includes students straight from high school, as well are those who work full-time and have other responsibilities. NECC is known for its highly acclaimed, award-winning literary arts magazine, Parnassus, which won the coveted Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press. Students relax by participating in ping pong tournaments, going on college sponsored trips, or even writing to the award winning college newspaper, Observer. Haverhill is just 30 miles from Boston, which is the hub of diverse entertainment.
