The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is a private research university located in Rochester, New York. It has over 5,600 undergraduates, and is home to the renowned Institute of Optics and Eastman School of Music. It’s an institution that encourages independent thought; UR students are allowed to construct individualized majors & minors and develop independent research projects. Its cultural awareness groups and study abroad program ensures that its students develop a diverse perspective. The campus also plays host to over 200 student organizations, including a substantial Greek scene. ArtAwake, a one-day art & music event open to the local community and the end-of-Spring-semester Pillow Fight at the academic quad are other classic Yellowjacket ways to unwind! Notable U of R alumni include Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate & former US Secretary of Energy and George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak company. UR, located at the bend of Genesee River, offers a wonderful campus-based experience.
