William Paterson University in suburban Wayne, New Jersey, could be aptly described as ‘centralized.’ After all, a popular skiing complex, the Jersey Shore, New York City, and historic Great Falls are all within just a half-hour’s drive from its gorgeously wooded 370-acre campus. Furthermore, its student-run radio station WPSC 88.7 is the headquarters for the annual International College Radio Day, and it preaches the value of civic engagement by requiring that students take at least one course in that subject in order to graduate, regardless of major. On-campus projects just within the past academic year include deep analysis of stock market volatility (which made local newscasts!) and the development of robots that facilitate three-dimensional approaches to industrial design. A special catchphrase, “Will. Power.” shows up everywhere one goes on campus, and the motivational effect is obvious: its 11,000 students dive as passionately into more than 40 programs of study as they do into more than 70 self-run cultural and recreational organizations. Heed mascot Billy the Bear’s invitation: embrace the WPU Pioneer orange and black!
