Dear Future American Express Team Member…

Starting a new internship or job is exciting, but it can also be intimidating if you don’t know what to expect. That’s why we asked two former American Express interns and two current employees to share their best advice. Here’s what they had to say:

“Never be afraid to ask for help. American Express is a big company, and there were many things I didn’t know when I got there. My team members always encouraged me to ask questions so I could get up to speed on my day-to-day tasks and get past any roadblocks. It’s important to think of your internship as a summer-long interview and treat it like you’re preparing for a future career here.  It’s also important to find out if the company is the right fit for you, so don’t be afraid to network.” – Eric Suarez, University of Florida, Class of 2017

“Working at American Express is great for personal growth. There are a lot of people and moving parts involved in making things happen here, and it’s important to be creative and approach everything with a problem-solving mindset. The work is challenging, and it also has the potential to touch millions of people. So when you do have wins, the payoff is real.” – Todd Wilson, Current Mobile Engineering Manager at Amex and Brigham Young University Grad

“The environment at American Express is team-focused, innovative, fun and full of hard workers. But it isn’t all serious. Definitely take advantage of all the intern events the company plans for you (like baseball games, bowling trips and “Escape the Room” outings). They were always a great time and gave us a chance to hang out outside of work.” – Raina Williams, Former Intern at Amex, Swarthmore College Class of 2018

“American Express isn’t like a lot of other big companies. I think our hackathons are proof of that, and some of the coolest projects have come out of those events. We also have different employee groups, so I’d definitely encourage you to find one that matches your interests. I’m a member of the Women in Technology group, where we partner with middle schools to teach girls how to code. It’s one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had.” – Stephanie Cruz, Software Engineer at Amex and University of Florida Grad
