  • Responsibilities

    Sheltering Arms is seeking an Education Specialist for our New Program in the Bronx. The Education Specialist will operate within a professional, trauma informed and client-centered environment. Serve as the liaison between the agency program and the NYC DOE. Communicate with the schools of origin for the children in the facility and advocate for their needs.

    Provide tutoring / educational enhancement to various ages, including pre-school aged children through age 12. Work within a multi-disciplinary team to develop goals inclusive of all children’s educational needs and ensuring that they are appropriately placed to avoid and eliminate any risk to their educational development.

    Essential Functions:

    • Establish a collaborative and interactive relationship with the Department of Education, Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Education and all other related services.
    • Establish immediate communication with the child’s school of origin to assure minimal disruption to education.
    • Attend case specific parent/teachers school conferences and other education, related conferences.
    • Document communication with schools and related collaterals, as well as children and their families in appropriate record.
    • Assist in obtaining report cards and individual educational plans from DOE.
    • Attend educational forums at New York City Children’s Services or any other institution.
    • Provide appropriate educational activities for pre-school aged children.
    • Provide tutoring/enhancement as needed
    • Complete educational assessments as appropriate
    • Other duties as assigned

  • Qualifications
    • Master’s in education preferred
    • Must possess comprehensive knowledge of New York City’s Board of Education and has the ability to negotiate all aspects of this system to access services for identified clients.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
