Social media platforms started simply as networking tools, used to help people find long-lost friends and to stay in touch with friends and family members from around the globe. These days, however, professionals and businesses leverage social media sites to connect with and stay in the minds of clients and/or customers, to promote a positive image of themselves or of the brand or company, and to garner sales or gain new clients. Since so many professionals and professional organizations are using social media sites for work-related purposes, it makes sense that new jobs in social media are opening up constantly. If you think you’d like to try your hand at running the social media site for an individual or organization, the first thing to do is to be active on the major social media sites! You can’t manage someone else’s online profile and/or page if you can’t manage your own or if you don’t know how to work various platforms. Constantly be on the lookout for the newest and hottest social media platforms and, more than that, understand the unique value and potential of each different social media outlet. If you’re serious about landing top social media jobs, you have to understand how competitive these positions are and you have to be willing to work hard to get them! Use your own social media profiles to try and find potential industry connections that you may have. No matter how tenuous these connections, you have a better chance of working for an organization if you’re the friend of a friend of someone who likes your personal social media posts! It’s also a good idea to take the time to get your resume looking polished—aim for a modern, clean resume that’s free of any errors and that demonstrates your ability to convey important information succinctly. If you keep honing your social media skills and going after what you want, you’re bound to find the social media entry-level job you’ve always dreamed of.
