How do I start to gain work experience in the career field I am studying?

Hi, I’m a sophomore Computer science and Engineering major. I want to know how to start gaining experience for the career you want to begin after college. A lot of internships and jobs want you to already have experience, so I was curious as to where to start to gain that out of classroom experience?

You're definitely at an advantage, because gaining experience in software engineering is pretty straightforward: just build some stuff! Employers love to see that you take initiative outside just your school/work. If you build a cool app, it could be great for your portfolio. Especially if you ship it to the world, and even get some real users on it! That would be awesome! Shoot, you might not even need a job if it goes well.

As a matter of fact, there are actually tons of engineers that make their way into the industry every year who don't even have degrees or professional work experience, but have been working on software on their own for a while. So just start writing some code that you're proud of and show it off!
