Ask the WayUp Team: What’s it REALLY Like to Work Here?

What’s it like to work at WayUp? For starters, we get to help college students and recent grads find their dream jobs. Of course, there’s more than one way to make that happen. That’s why we asked team members across WayUp to share what they do and why they work here.

This is what they had to say. Want to join us? Check out all of our open positions here.

Alex Lougovtsov

Role: Head of B2C Marketing
What do you do at WayUp?
My team is responsible for growing WayUp’s user base using strategies like paid advertising, content, and partnerships with other organizations to drive new sign-ups. We work to have a presence wherever college students and recent grads are—whether that’s digital channels, social media, on campus, or at events.
Why do you work here?
The marketing landscape for college students and recent college grads is always changing. That means we have to learn fast, adapt, and constantly iterate to keep up. Sometimes it can feel challenging to keep up, but it’s so gratifying when you get to solve really big, complex problems..

Chloe Philips

Role: Field Marketing Manager
What do you do at WayUp?
I manage acquisition from channels like campus representatives, influencers, and partnerships with on-campus organizations. When a person signs up for WayUp as a result of someone telling them about it, that falls under me.
Why do you work here?
Working at such a fast-growing startup means that each role has as much impact as the next. I think it’s truly unique to have this much responsibility as a recent grad.

Damien LeGault

What do you do at WayUp?
I maintain the infrastructure WayUp runs on and promote DevOps methodology.
Why do you work here?
We have such a great, dedicated group of engineers here. It’s a pleasure to work with them every day. It’s also very rewarding knowing that we’re helping make the transition from college into the workforce a little bit easier.

Dan Murdoch

Why do you work here?
Working for a company that has such a strong foundation in social responsibility and in shaping the future for so many organizations is truly an honor.

Elana Widmann

Role: PR & Communications Manager
What do you do at WayUp?
I’m responsible for sharing WayUp’s story with the outside world.
Why do you work here?
I was actually recruited to come work at WayUp by the one and only Nikki Schlecker (WayUp’s first hire and the Head of People) 2.5 years ago. While I was unsure of leaving my first job out of college, I knew that working at WayUp was the perfect place to grow as a marketing professional and be part of a group of people who truly cared about something larger than themselves.

Emily Hochman

Role: Sales Trainer
What do you do at WayUp?
I ensure all new sales hires are educated and trained on all aspects of WayUp so they can achieve their sales objectives.
Why do you work here?
Because I love being part of such a fast-paced, collaborative environment where I learn something new every day.

Jack McCloy

Role: Backend Engineer
What do you do at WayUp?
Along with the rest of the engineering team here, I write the code that makes our website run.
Why do you work here?
I chose to work at WayUp because of the people. I’ve worked at a number of different places, but I’ve never worked at a place where I’ve had so much fun with my colleagues.

Jenna Stauffer

Role: Digital Marketing Associate
What do you do at WayUp?
I help bring in new users through digital channels like Facebook (follow us here!) and Google.
Why do you work here?
I love working with passionate people who get things done. The WayUp team is full of smart people who aren’t afraid to get scrappy.

Jim Leahy

Role:
Technical Recruitment Manager
What do you do at WayUp?
I manage talent acquisition for our Tech and Product teams. In plain English, I recruit incredible talent to push the WayUp team to even greater heights.
Why do you work here?
Two reasons: The first is the current WayUp tech team and their incredible potential. They’ve completed an amazing undertaking by bringing us to this point with the product. They’ll also be critical to adding new talent and ultimately creating an even more innovative tool for students and graduates to use. The second reason is that I believe in the mission of the organization.  As most students know, approaching graduation can be overwhelming—everyone you know is asking what you’re going to do, or where you’re going to go. I believe students who are about to embark out into the world can feel a little less vulnerable and a lot more confident having a tool like WayUp at their fingertips.

Linda Kung

Role: Frontend Engineer
What do you do at WayUp?
I work on whatever someone sees in their browser—mostly UI and UX functionality.
Why do you work here?
Like everyone here, I value our mission. It’s a rewarding job because my work is so visual. When things go into production, it’s really cool to see the possible impact my work can have on users.

Mary Ellen Mathis

Role: Office Manager
What do you do at WayUp
Basically, I keep the lights on and the staff happy.
Why do you work here?
I love working at WayUp because being innovative and creative is not only accepted, but encouraged. In the last three months, I’ve been part of a team designing and creating an office worth showing off!

Mathieu Sabourin

Role: Senior Full Stack Engineer
What do you do at WayUp?
I’m a Software Engineer. I build, test, and maintain any of the technology pieces needed to make the site useful for our users.
Why do you work here?
I was lucky enough to know someone in the industry who helped me land the internship that kicked off my career. I don’t want this kind of opportunity to be only for the lucky few.

Michael Wieder

Role: Head of Brand Marketing
What do you do at WayUp?
I lead our brand marketing team. It’s my job to make sure every college student and recent grad knows (and loves) WayUp. This can include creating large marketing campaigns like National Intern Day, events on college campuses, and so much more.
Why do you work here?
#1 It’s a place where I can push the limits of my creativity. I’ve been put in positions to find creative solutions to help the company recognize it’s potential. #2 I get to help people launch their careers! The mission behind the work matters to me just as much as the day-to-day work itself.

Murphy Harr

Role: Customer Success Associate
What do you do at WayUp?
I work with companies looking to hire our users, and I help them use our platform to find the perfect candidates for their jobs.
Why do you work here?
Because I get to see this company make a real-life impact. I graduated college in May, and now I work in a place that helps people in college or just out of college (like me!) get jobs and internships that will jumpstart the rest of their careers.
